The Artist
"I am a textile, collage, assemblage and book artist and I work mainly with found objects, old papers and photographs. I’m never happier than when I’m wandering around a flea market, picking up bits of ephemera and working out how to use them in my art. I like to create stories from old photographs and papers, often combining them with household or natural objects to create very personal artworks. Working with old photographs can be incredibly therapeutic; the person in the photograph becoming a conduit for your thoughts or feelings. In 2022, I co-wrote ‘Artful Memories; how to make unique art with old photographs.’
My courses are about sharing techniques and structures for students to explore their own stories, true or imagined, through the use of found materials and photographs."
The Workshop
"In this course, I will teach several techniques for creating artworks using old photographs. Students can use photographs that are personal to them, or use found photographs (I can provide images that can be downloaded and printed if you don’t have your own).
I will start by showing you a selection of my artworks and there will be time for your questions. I will then show you a number of different techniques and projects and you can choose whether you want to try them all or focus on a few and do the rest at home.
We will:
• explore ways of transferring photographic images onto different surfaces
• alter photographs with paint, collage and stitch
• alter a photograph using negative space
• weave photographs
• combine photographs with other objects.
At the end of the day, you will have a selection of artworks to take home and, more importantly, lots of ideas to explore further in your own time."
