About Liz Cooksey
My works combine wire and thread to create intricate and delicate two dimensional and three-dimensional works reflecting observations of nature. The inspiration stems from the love natural forms in which I look for shapes, textures, colours, within what might be a hedge row or a motorway verge, recording the small and insignificant details that can be sometimes overlooked.
I live and work in Manchester where I studied Embroidery and went on to develop my own practise and teach textiles and fine art. Over the years my work has evolved and has become focused on the use of mixed media with a fascination for wire and crochet.
2 day workshop
Over the period of two days we will explore and experiment with wire and other materials to produce standing sculptures based on observations from natural forms seen in hedgerows, flowers beds and the natural landscape.
We will be adopting a mixed media approach, shaping wire and using hand stitching, crochet, wrapping and binding techniques. We will explore a simple needle tatting technique to create sprig like structures. Hand stitching will be used to embellish, bring colour and surface texture to our explorations.
To explore and consider composition, these explorations will be embedded into wooden plinths or grouped together in small vases to produce standing sculptures. Small wooden plinths will be provided but participants could use found pieces of drift wood or characterful pieces of reclaimed wood.
