Re-imagined with Rachael Singleton 21 & 22 September 2024

Rachael is an experimental textile and mixed media artist living in West Yorkshire, England and loves bringing together materials in the chase of an idea.  All this leads her to make one-off pieces or very small series.

“The natural world is a constant source of enchantment and I also have a few preoccupations such as stones and stone walls, containment and housing objects.

Pieces are often small, or if larger, are the combination of smaller elements.  Layers and complex surfaces gradually evolve through the use of natural or vintage textiles, wet-strength tissues and paint.  I also enjoy abstract and mixed media painting; whilst my textiles employ a more muted palette, I’m finding brighter colours want to make themselves known in paintings.

The creative process interests me deeply and its something I enjoy conversations about or reflecting on through my blog”.

Re-imagned Workshop

What if we took a well-known or favourite painting as our historical inspiration and re-imagined it as something completely different?

This two-day workshop will allow you to choose format such as a set of small cards that could go in a box/tobacco tin or a set of tags on a ring binder, a vessel, a 2D textile piece or a collection of small ones, a scroll, hanging or concertina-form artist book.  It is designed to harness your individuality and preferences and the tutor will provide one-to-one help and suggestions throughout the weekend.   You can choose to work more paper or fabric-based and whilst you will come with an idea of what you might like to create, there are plenty of materials and fabric in the studio that can be purchased if you change your mind!

We will be ‘mining’ images for visual elements that we will repeat, change in scale, fragment and re-assemble into abstracted designs in your chosen format which can be hand or machine-stitched into.

The workshop is designed for students having a little creative experience behind them rather than beginners.
