Screenprinting with Natural Dyes onto Fabric – Jacqui Symons

The Artist

Slow Lane Studio forages, cultivates and uses plants to create colour for textiles, paper, printmaking and pigments.

Wanting to be more environmentally aware, buy and consume fewer products and generate less waste, Jacqui began exploring natural colour and dyes and developed the use of plant-based pigments for oil-based printmaking inks.  She expanded into making her own watercolours, pastels, inks, screenprinting pastes and dry powdered pigments from plant sources. Jacqui trained under Jenny Dean to learn about the use of natural dyes with textiles and yarns. Slow Lane Studio provides resources, practical advice and workshops focusing on natural dyeing, plant-based pigments and artist colours.

The Workshop

An introduction to screenprinting onto fabric using natural dyes, this 2 day course will show participants how to use plant-based colour to create simple yet beautiful screenprinted textiles. You will learn how to create and mix colour from both plant material and dye extracts, to mix these into screenprinting pastes for textiles and to expand the range of colours and tones within your screenprints using colour modifiers.  We’ll briefly explore screenprinting with mordants before dyeing, allowing for a range of tones and pattern to be produced from a single dye pot.  You’ll experiment with layering, colour and shape, using paper stencils to create your own designs and print them onto various textiles.  The emphasis is on experimentation and play - no experience of screenprinting is necessary, as Jacqui will guide you through all techniques and how best to use natural colour in your screenprinting. You’ll take away a collection of screenprinted textile designs and colour samples to keep as references or develop into a further project.

Screenprinting with plant-based colour is a natural progression from learning about natural dyeing methods or for those interested in exploring more sustainable techniques within their practice.
