Handmade Papers, Patterns & Print With Clare Youngs – 19th September 2027

“Make your own papers, play with pattern, and piece together something wonderfully unique.”

Come and explore the wonderfully creative world of collage in this relaxed, inspiring, hands-on workshop. Discover how to transform simple sheets of paper into beautiful, colourful and richly textured artworks, using your own handmade papers to create something truly unique.

As a collage artist, I create all the papers I use in my artwork, often inspired by wildlife and the natural world. Using everything from paint, oil pastels, pencils and ink to chalk, printing techniques and found objects, I build up layers of marks, textures and patterns that bring my work to life. In this workshop, I’ll share some of my favourite techniques so you can begin creating a collection of papers that reflect your own style and imagination.

We’ll experiment with a variety of my favourite markmaking methods, including wax resist, printing with found objects, gelli plate mono printing and repeat patterns using rubber stamps. You’ll soon have a wonderful assortment of colourful papers, ready to cut, layer and piece together.

Next, we’ll explore the art of composition. I’ll show you how to develop simple thumbnail sketches, combining shapes to create a larger image, and how to break down photographic references into manageable sections for collage.

Then comes the really fun part, bringing your papers together to create your own artwork! You might choose to make a collection of smaller pieces to display in a sketchbook, or create a larger artwork suitable for framing. I’ll also show you how to make a simple handmade sketchbook, so that you can collect and display your work and continue to add to it.

You’ll leave with your own handmade papers, new skills, fresh ideas and plenty of inspiration to keep experimenting with collage at home.

No previous art experience is needed, and all abilities are welcome. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced artist looking to try something new, this is an opportunity to slow down, play with materials and discover the joy of making something entirely your own.

All materials are provided ,just bring your curiosity and a willingness to experiment!
